What Is the Vascular Laser?

The vascular laser targets abnormal or unwanted blood vessels in the skin. At Northside Dermatology, we use the Cutera Excel V laser system, which offers two wavelengths—532 nm and 1064 nm—to address vascular structures at varying skin depths:

  • 532 nm Wavelength: Targets superficial vascular lesions, including rosacea and diffuse redness.
  • 1064 nm Wavelength: Penetrates deeper to treat conditions such as larger blood vessels, leg veins, and venous lakes.

This dual-wavelength technology makes the Excel V system versatile and effective for treating a wide range of vascular concerns.

How Does the Vascular Laser Work?

Vascular lasers work by targeting hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. The laser’s energy is absorbed by blood vessels, generating heat that safely destroys the vessel without harming surrounding tissues. This process reduces blood flow to the area, diminishing redness over time.

What to Expect During Treatment

  1. Preparation: Your clinician will apply a gliding gel to the treatment area and provide protective eyewear.
  2. Procedure: The Excel V laser handpiece is passed over the skin in sections. The two wavelengths are used to treat superficial and deeper vascular concerns.
  3. Comfort: The laser’s built-in cooling system minimises discomfort, eliminating the need for topical or local anesthesia.

Treatments typically last 15 to 30 minutes.

Recovery and Aftercare

Post-Treatment Recovery

  • Mild redness or swelling may occur but usually resolves within a few hours to days.
  • Makeup can be applied to camouflage redness, and swelling can be reduced with prescription tablets if necessary.

Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
  • Refrain from using skincare products with irritants (e.g., retinol, AHAs, salicylic acid) for one week.
  • Avoid saunas and hot tubs for one to two days after treatment.

FAQs

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band flicking against the skin. The cooling mechanism enhances comfort during the procedure.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions required depends on the condition being treated. For best results, a series of treatments is usually recommended.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are minimal and may include redness, swelling, or bruising, which typically resolve within days. Rarely, patients may experience blistering or pigmentary changes.

How Should I Prepare for Treatment?

Before your treatment:

Avoid tanning or self-tanning products for at least four weeks.

Stop using skincare products with active ingredients (e.g., vitamin A, AHAs) two days prior.

Notify your clinician if you have a history of cold sores, as antiviral medication may be recommended.
