Nanofractional radiofrequency (RF) is an advanced nonsurgical skin resurfacing treatment. By stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, nanofractional RF diminishes textural irregularities and other signs of skin damage. A series of nanofractional RF treatments creates a smoother, healthier and younger-looking complexion with little to no downtime and lasting results.

What Is Radiofrequency Technology in Aesthetic Medicine?

Radiofrequency technology has widespread use in aesthetic medicine. RF technology heat the treated area to induce tissue remodelling and stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. These safe, effective and versatile treatments have a wide range of applications, including reducing fine lines, skin laxity, acne scars and general skin rejuvenation.

What Is the Venus Viva NanoFractional Radiofrequency Device?

Venus Viva combines nanofractional RF and SmartScan technology to refine the skin without the discomfort and downtime of a laser treatment. Tiny pins in the Venus Viva handpiece create wounds in the skin and transmit heat through the skin’s surface to the deeper layer. The body’s natural healing mechanism works to repair these minuscule wounds by increasing the production of fibroblasts. In turn, this increases collagen and elastin production and improves signs of damage visible on the skin’s surface.

What Differentiates Venus Viva From Other Radiofrequency Treatments?

Venus Viva is both a resurfacing device and a needling-assisted RF device. RF offers deeper collagen stimulation with less downtime and fewer side effects than older resurfacing laser technology, such as Fraxel.

The Venus Viva system allows the operator full control over ablation (treatment for changes on the skin’s surface) and coagulation (treatment for deeper scars and lines) for enhanced efficacy in resolving mild to severe skin damage.

Treatment with Venus Viva is more comfortable due to the SmartScan technology, which activates only 4 pins of the 160 pins on the treatment tip at any given time. The pins are activated sequentially when delivery RF energy, ensuring a comfortable experience for the patients.

What Concerns Can Venus Viva Nanofractional RF Treat?

Venus Viva Nanofractional RF for skin resurfacing and collagen remodelling can improve:

How Should I Prepare My Skin Before Treatment?

Before undergoing treatment with nanofractional RF, be diligent about sun protection and optimise your skincare routine. Avoid products with active ingredients such as vitamin A and AHA for two days before your procedure. See our dermal clinicians for a custom skincare regime prior to treatment for optimal and longer-lasting results.

If you are thinking of having both dermal fillers and radiofrequency treatment, the dermatologists who consult at Northside Dermatology recommend RF treatment first for collagen stimulation. This may help reduce the amount of dermal filler required subsequently to achieve the same result.

What Can I Expect During Treatment With Venus Viva Nanofractional RF?

A local anaesthetic cream is applied 30 minutes before the procedure. When it has taken effect, your dermal clinician will move the handpiece across the treatment area in a stamping pattern. Most patients feel mild or no discomfort.

How Should I Care for My Skin After Treatment?

Following your dermal clinician’s aftercare instructions is essential to protect your healing skin and maximise your results. Bring a hat to wear after the procedure as your skin will be sensitive. Makeup and sunscreen can be applied 24 hours after treatment.

What Are the Side Effects?

The most common side effects associated with Venus Viva nanofractional RF are redness and swelling. These side effects peak within hours. Mild redness or swelling can last for one to four days, depending on the settings used during treatment, and can easily be camouflaged with makeup. Fine pinpoint scabbing may develop but is generally not visible to others. A transient acne flare can occur. If you are prone to acne, tell your clinicians so they can prescribe an acne prevention regimen prior to starting nanofractional RF treatment. Rare side effects include infection and transient pigmentary changes. Your clinician can adjust the treatment intensity to ensure you are ready in time for any upcoming professional or social engagement.

Will I See Results Immediately? Are They Permanent?

The collagen remodelling process is not instantaneous. Since many of the benefits appear after this has taken place, it can take a number of months for the most significant results of your nanofractional RF treatment to show. Some patients report seeing gradual, ongoing improvement for up to a year. The benefits of this treatment are long-lasting, but nanofractional RF cannot halt the effects of time, sun exposure and gravity. Follow-up sessions may be required to maintain your results.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

This varies from patient to patient. The number will depend on your treatment objectives, the severity of your skin concerns and the area(s) being treated. The cosometic dermatologists who consult at Northside Dermatology generally recommend three to six treatments scheduled four to six weeks apart. A yearly maintenance treatment is also advisable.

What Does Dr Liu Say About Nanofractional RF?

“Traditional resurfacing devices require prolonged downtime that many patients find hard to fit into their busy lifestyle. Nanofractional RF can achieve similar results for acne scars, fine lines and deeper wrinkles, and pigmentary changes without the extended recovery. Many patients have the treatment done and work from home for a day, then get back to their normal activities. The nanofractional RF technology also offers a safe acne scar treatment and rejuvenation option for patients with darker skin types, minimising the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.”
