PicoSure Pro builds on the strengths of PicoSure, the former global gold standard for pigment removal and skin rejuvenation. With 50% more power than its predecessor, PicoSure Pro is designed to deliver faster results, fewer treatments, and reduced side effects — all with no downtime.
PicoSure Pro’s efficacy and safety are backed by over one million treatments performed and more than 83 scientific publications. It is the only picosecond device that can treat a wide range of pigmentation issues across all skin types, as well as dark acne marks and early acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines, and enlarged pores.
PicoSure Pro is especially effective for those with skin of colour, including Asians, Mediterraneans, Middle Easterners, Indians, Latin Americans, and Africans.

PicoSure Pro operates at a wavelength of 755nm and delivers energy in picoseconds — that’s one trillionth of a second. This ultra-fast photomechanical delivery spares your skin from high thermal damage while precisely targeting pigmentation, acne scars, and more.
Unlike other lasers that target water in the skin, PicoSure Pro focuses on the melanin chromophore. Its short pulses of energy vibrate and shatter pigment into tiny particles, which are then easily eliminated by the body’s natural detoxification system. This not only allows for the protection of surrounding tissues but also minimises the risk of adverse effects and discomfort commonly associated with other laser treatments.
PicoSure Pro’s advanced laser technology excels at treating unwanted pigmentation, including:
The dermatologists who consult at Northside Dermatology and our cosmetic team also use this laser for general skin revitalisation concerns, such as:
At Northside Dermatology, we offer patients safe, effective, science-backed treatments. Here is why we chose to bring PicoSure Pro to our Melbourne dermatology clinic, based on the recommendation from the dermatologists who consult with us:
PicoSure Pro is the only picosecond device that has received FDA clearance to treat specific skin conditions like melasma, naevus of Ota and Hori’s naevus. This allows us to offer a wider range of treatment options that have been reviewed rigorously for safety and effectiveness.
PicoSure Pro has been the subject of more than 83 peer-reviewed clinical publications, more than any other picosecond device. This extensive body of research ensures PicoSure Pro treatments are both cutting-edge and evidence-based.
Over a million PicoSure treatments have been performed worldwide. The newly improved PicoSure Pro allows us to continue this legacy of safety while offering enhanced efficacy for even better results.
The 755nm wavelength used by PicoSure Pro is particularly effective for treating both epidermal and dermal pigment. It has a higher melanin absorption rate compared to the 1064nm wavelength, making it a more efficient choice for treating pigment.
Compared to other picosecond technologies that operate at 1064nm and 532nm wavelengths, the 755nm wavelength has a higher melanin (pigment) to haemoglobin (blood) ratio (a little technical here). This results in less redness post-treatment, minimal downtime, and a low risk of bruising or petechia
The original PicoSure debuted in 2012, becoming the first picosecond laser on the market. It has long been considered the gold standard for pigment removal. As of 2022, this technology has been surpassed by the upgraded PicoSure Pro.
PicoSure Pro offers a 50% increase in energy, coupled with new handpieces and an adjustable fluence system. This means treatments are not only more powerful but also faster and more customisable, allowing for more efficient skin rejuvenation and pigment clearance, particularly in ethnic skin types. There are also improvements in recovery time and risk profile that make PicoSure Pro a more convenient option for the busy patients.
PicoSure Pro represents the newest generation of picosecond laser technology. The dermatologists who consult at Northside Dermatology believe it is now the most comprehensive and effective picosecond laser treatment available.
The PicoSure Pro laser can be used on nearly any area that is prone to developing pigmentation, including the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs and feet.
Before anything else, book an appointment either with the cosmetic dermatologist who consult with us or our dermal clinician. This initial meeting will allow the clinician to assess your skin and tailor the PicoSure Pro treatment to your specific needs.
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks prior to your treatment, as sun-damaged or tanned skin can be more sensitive to laser treatments. Your provider may also recommend a pre-treatment skincare regimen to prime your skin for the laser application.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our friendly staff and escorted to the treatment room. Your provider will begin by cleansing your skin to prepare it for the laser. They will also apply a topical anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort.
The application of the PicoSure Pro laser typically lasts 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. You will hear a slight snapping sound as the laser passes over your skin and feel a sensation likened to the flick of a rubber band. Most patients find it tolerable, especially with the anaesthetic.
Before you leave, your clinician will provide post-treatment care instructions and any recommended skincare products to enhance your results.
The treatment can involve some discomfort, but with the use of topical anaesthetic cream pre-treatment and cool air during treatment, it is a tolerable experience for most patients.
With PicoSure Pro, you do not need to sacrifice convenience for results. You can return to your regular activities almost immediately, with only mild redness or swelling left behind. These symptoms typically resolve within a few hours, although in some cases, they may linger for up to 24 hours.
Excessive sun exposure should be avoided post-treatment. This precaution helps to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and the recurrence of pigmentation. When you do have to spend time outdoors, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 50, and apply regularly to shield yourself from sun damage.
Most patients experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation and possibly some minor swelling right after the PicoSure Pro treatment. These side effects generally fade within the first few hours.
You may also notice the pigmentation in the treated area intensifying post-treatment. This is a normal and expected occurrence when treating pigment, and it should soon fade away.
Depending on the condition treated and the settings used, patients usually start to see improvements between two and four weeks post-treatment.
The anticipated number of treatment sessions depends on your skin condition. Most unwanted pigment significantly lightens or clears in 2 to 4 sessions with the PicoSure Pro.
Your recommended treatment schedule depends primarily on the type and severity of your condition. The typical treatment interval is three to four weeks. For some conditions, patients only need to come in once every three months.
You may be a candidate for PicoSure Pro treatments if:
