Eye concerns

The skin under the eye is thinner and more delicate than elsewhere on the body, making it more susceptible to signs of ageing, fatigue and skin stress. Dark circles and eye bags are common concerns that many struggle with. While many assume lack of sleep is the main cause, there are several underlying factors that contribute to these issues.

  • Genetic Pigmentation – Some individuals naturally have darker skin under the eyes due to hereditary factors.
  • Melasma & Hyperpigmentation – Hormonal changes, sun exposure, and skin inflammation can cause melasma, leading to increased pigmentation under the eyes.
  • Volume Loss & Shadowing – As we age, fat and collagen depletion around the eyes create hollows, making dark circles more prominent.
  • Lower Eyelid Fat Pad Protrusion – This can cause puffiness and eye bags, leading to a tired appearance.
  • Visible Under-Eye Veins – Thin skin under the eyes can reveal underlying blood vessels, contributing to a dark, bluish tone.
  • Collagen & Elastin Loss – Aging reduces skin elasticity, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and a crepey under-eye texture.

Our eye rejuvenation treatments

At Northside Dermatology, we will create a tailored plan that utilises a range of targeted treatments that restore your skin without the need for extensive or invasive surgeries. Our treatments generally fall into the following categories, and depending on your skin needs, we will use one or a combination of these to achieve optimal results.

  • Hydrating & Firming Treatments – Non-invasive procedures that restore moisture and improve skin elasticity.
  • Energy-Based Treatments – Laser and light therapies target pigmentation, tighten skin, and stimulate collagen production.
  • Targeted Skincare Solutions – Prescription brightening cream, medical-grade skin serums, and creams to address pigmentation, melasma, and skin quality.

Frequently asked questions

Are non-surgical treatments effective for under-eye bags and dark circles?

Absolutely. For the vast majority of patients, non-surgical treatments are highly effective. We create a personalised plan that targets the root cause of your concern for the best results.

Can I use eye creams instead of getting in-office treatments?

High-quality, medical-grade eye creams are vital for maintenance and prevention, but they cannot replace the structural correction achieved by in-office treatments. Think of creams as supporting skin health, hydration, and mild brightening, while professional treatments like lasers are necessary to restore lost volume, tighten significant laxity, or correct deep-set pigment issues. We always recommend a specialised skincare regime to protect and prolong the life of your rejuvenation results.

What is the difference between "Under-Eye Bags" and "Puffy Eyes," and how does a dermatologist treat them?

It is important to distinguish between these two concerns as it will determine which treatment is best for you.

  • Puffy Eyes: This is often a temporary issue caused by fluid retention due to lack of sleep, high salt intake, or allergies. It typically appears worse in the morning and can be managed with lifestyle changes.
  • Under-Eye Bags: This is a permanent structural change where the fat pads supporting the eyeball bulge forward due to the weakening of muscles and tissues with age. Dermatologists treat true bags using specialised Radiofrequency (RF) energy devices or, for severe cases, recommend a surgical consultation.
Is Radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening safe for dark or highly pigmented skin tones?

Yes, modern RF skin tightening (including devices like Thermage and RF Microneedling) is generally much safer for darker skin tones than traditional ablative lasers. RF energy uses electrical current and heat, which are less attracted to melanin than laser light. This significantly lowers the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or skin darkening, allowing us to safely and effectively firm and tighten the delicate under-eye area.

I have loose, "crepey" skin under my eyes. What non-surgical option is best for tightening?

Loose or “crepey” skin is best treated with energy-based devices that target collagen production deep within the skin, providing a non-surgical lifting effect.

  • Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is an excellent option. It combines tiny needles to create micro-channels with radiofrequency heat to stimulate significant collagen remodelling and skin tightening.
  • Dedicated RF Devices can also deliver bulk heating to firm and lift the delicate skin of the upper and lower eyelids.

These treatments are preferred for skin laxity because they rebuild the skin’s structure from the inside out.
